Kofi's Story

For months, Kofi's teacher had been concerned. He was bright and engaged in class discussions, but his written work was falling behind. He struggled to copy from the board and often squinted during lessons. His teacher assumed he was distracted. His parents assumed he was struggling academically.

Nobody considered that Kofi might simply not be able to see.

When Hopefront Foundation set up a free health screening camp in his community, Kofi was brought along by his mother almost as an afterthought. Within minutes, our volunteer optometrist identified a significant refractive error — a vision problem that was entirely correctable with glasses.

Within weeks, Kofi had a pair of prescription glasses. The change was immediate and dramatic. He began reading fluently. He could see the board clearly for the first time in years. His academic performance improved rapidly. His teacher sent a note to our team to say she could barely recognise the child he had become.

Kofi's story is a reminder that so many of the barriers children face are not insurmountable — they just need to be seen. A simple eye test changed everything for him. That is the power of showing up in communities with the care and tools that families cannot otherwise access.
